John was my Honours Thesis supervisor. I was initially scared of him, but he would always make me feel at ease with his kindly smile and witty sense of humour. He was patient and gentle, and always made time for me when I needed his help. When I returned to NUS for postgrad studies, I would pop into his office for informal chats (by then, I was less afraid of him). He was always ready for a chat, and has given me a lot of wise counsel. His advice been one of the most valuable things that I have received from my postgrad studies here. I owe him so much.
